The Light Shines in the Darkness…
In my study and devotion this week were these familiar words from John 1.5, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” (NRSV) The light of which John writes is the life Jesus Christ brings to us. Later in John, Jesus himself will say that he came so that we may have life and have it abundantly. (10.10)
Reading different translations and paraphrases has a way of illumining the text in new ways. Eugene Peterson’s The Message paraphrases verses 4 and 5 this way, “What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.” The Revised English Bible renders this translation, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never mastered it.”
The darkness did not overcome it. The darkness couldn’t put it out. The darkness has never mastered it. And it’s not going to start now.
Wherever you are on your journey with Christ (and even if you have not started it yet), may you know this light. May you know this life. And that abundant.
Life and Light,
FirstYOUTH will host a Fall Kickoff event for students entering grades 6-12 on Wednesday, August 18, from 6 - 7 pm in the FUMC Youth Room. Parents and guardians are invited and encouraged to attend, but attendance is optional.
Hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks will be provided. Families are asked to bring sides, snacks, or dessert: mac and cheese, salad, chips, watermelon, brownies, etc.

Everyone will have the opportunity to fill out updated contact sheets and permission slips. All students will receive a FirstYOUTH Kickoff T-shirt. And yes, families, you WILL be asked to play a get-to-know-you game with us!
