FALL PREVENTION TIPS
Falls are a serious matter and can lead to injury, even death. As we age, the chance of falling increases dramatically. Any fall or near-fall should be reported to your Primary Care Provider.
Here is a list of actions which can reduce falls and can improve your safety:
· Have regular eye doctor appointments & update glasses, as necessary.
· Have your feet & foot ware checked by your Primary Care Provider once a year.
· Exercise regularly to improve balance and strength.
· Check pathways in & around your home for obstacles – papers, books, clothes, and shoes. These can be a tripping and/or fall hazard.
· Remove small throw rugs or use double-sided tape to keep them from slipping.
· Keep frequently used items in lower cabinets so you can reach them without a step stool.
· Consider grab bars next to and inside the bathtub & next to the toilet. Elevated toilets make rising from toilet much easier.
· Use non-slip mats in bathtub & on shower floors.
· Use brighter light bulbs in your home. As we age, we need brighter lights to see well.
· Have handrails & lights installed on all staircases.
· Wear well-fitting shoes with good support inside & outside the house.
· Have your Primary Care Provider evaluate your medicines for drugs which could cause unsteadiness.
· Use an assistive device – cane or walker – if you are unsteady, even in the house.
