03-27-2024 FUMC Words for Wednesday

Celebrating Easter!

On Sunday we will celebrate Easter as a First United Methodist Church family. I love the chorus of the hymn, “Because He Lives,” written by Gloria and Bill Gaither: “Because he lives, I can face tomorrow; because he lives, all fear is gone; because I know he holds the future, and life is worth the living just because he lives.” This is the center of our Easter celebration. All the flowers, all the cards, all the pretty Easter dresses, all the delicious food that will be feasted on point to one thing: God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.

Historians and scholars have written about the existence of other messianic figures in the first century. Many claimed to be the answer for the Jewish people, but only Jesus of Nazareth was authentic. His followers, who were once so devastated, participated in the greatest movement in human history. They moved from cowardice to courage because he lives. They embodied the truth of the words the Apostle Paul wrote to believers living in the city of Corinth:

“For as all die in Adam; so, all will be made alive in Christ.”(1 Corinthians 15:22)

Easter is more than the resurrection of Jesus. Because he lives, we live fully, abundantly, eternally. No challenge, no tragedy, no illness, not even death itself can take away our hope.

Of course, we will be tested and tempted. We will face pain and grief and loss in the course of our lives. We will face them differently because he lives. The message of Easter is the promise that we will ultimately live in the very presence of God. Revelation 21 promises that when we live in the presence of God, every tear is wiped away, even pain and death disappear. This is what we cling to on Easter. This is the truth that sustains us. This is what we believe.

Join us for Easter Worship at 7:00 a.m. for Sunrise, 8:30 a.m. for our Early Service, 9:30 a.m. for our Praise Service, or 11:00 a.m. for Traditional Worship.

May God in Christ bless you richly!
