07-10-2024 FUMC Words for Wednesday

“IN GOD WE TRUST”

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

Reliance on God and his providence was very real to our founding fathers as our early national documents bear eloquent testimony. It was not surprising that in the midst of the Civil War when our nation received its greatest test, the decision was made to inscribe on American coins the motto:

“In God We Trust”

Ever since that motto was first adopted there have been those who have felt it was hypocritical since so often, we put our priorities elsewhere.

First of all, the motto “In God We Trust” is not so much a boast as it is a conviction. It is not the proclamation of a smug people who deem themselves privileged and singled out for special favor. It is instead a conviction that calls us to repentance and nurtures our hopes. As one theologian put it: “If within we find nothing over us, we succumb to what is around us.”

The motto “In God We Trust,” while not always an actuality, is still a commitment, to be a nation whose Lord is God. While we are not presumptuous enough to think this is true in every way, we are committed to let it be so. Our prayer should be that God would make it so through us.

In Christ,

Jimmy

Adult Bible Study will continue with 1 Corinthians at 6 pm.

NEXT WEEK: we will have games in the fellowship hall from 2 - 4 pm

and supper at 5 pm.

 Backpack to School Bash

will take place on our campus on Saturday, August 3rd. If you’d like to donate to it, you may drop a check in the offering plate noted: Backpack. You may also donate actual school supplies (see list beside). You may place your donations in the box in the MAC. The Backpack event supplies families with school-age children a backpack with the necessary, school required, supplies that can be a financial burden for many parents.

Families wanting to sign up may do so before July 19th at https://sites.google.com/view/backpack-2-school-bash/register.

Volunteers are also needed on the 3rd. If you can help, just show up that morning by 9:30.

There will be a church-wide Church Conference on Sunday, July 28th at 2 pm in the sanctuary. The conference will vote on the selling of some acreage to address the MAC debt. All members are encouraged to attend.

Our tech booths are desperately needing more volunteers.

You don’t have to have tech experience. We only ask for a willingness to serve and learn. You would be asked to serve only once a month in the service of your choice.

Contact Jeremy Bruce at 214 435 1878.

After a few years break, our Flower Ministry is up and running again. So, if you order Altar Flowers, you have the choice of taking them home and enjoying them OR you may let our team of ladies divide the flowers up into smaller arrangements and take them to our homebound, nursing home, Branan Lodge, etc folks.

Any member or regular attender who wishes to be have our church app, Realm Connect, please contact the church office to receive an “invite”.

Please stop by and say a prayer over these quilts. Tying a knot lets the receiver know that people care and that we have prayed for them.

If you know of someone who would benefit from a prayer quilt,

please let the office or Paula Myers know.
