More Than Enough
Many times, my Dad would send me into his workshop to retrieve a tool he needed for a job. I’d glance around for a minute or two, where he told me, for the tool. When I couldn’t find it, I would go back and tell him I didn’t see it. After a brief pause, he would enter the shop and return within seconds, with the tool in hand. It had been there the whole time. I wasn’t looking carefully enough.
Life can be like that.
Sometimes we spend so much time thinking about what we don’t have that we miss the blessings God has already placed in front of us. We wish we had more time, more energy, more experience, or more talent. We imagine that if only we had a little more, then God could really use us.
But the older I get, the more I notice that God often works with what is already at hand. He has always seemed to enjoy using ordinary people in ordinary places. People who weren’t famous. People who didn’t think they had much to offer. People who simply trusted Him enough to take the next faithful step.
That makes me wonder how many opportunities we overlook because they don’t seem important enough. A word of encouragement. A visit with someone who has been lonely. A note in the mail. A prayer with a friend. None of those things make headlines, but they often make a difference.
As we prepare for worship this Sunday, I hope you’ll take a moment to look around your own life. Instead of asking, “What’s missing?” perhaps ask, “What has God already placed in my hands?”
You may be surprised by the answer.
