What Holds Your Attention?

The other day I found myself walking through the house looking for something. I had a purpose when I started, but somewhere along the way I noticed something on the kitchen counter that needed to be put away. That led me to another room where I remembered another unfinished task. Before long, I couldn’t even remember what I had set out to do in the first place.

I wish I could say that only happens around the house.

Life has a way of pulling at our attention. News headlines. Cell phone notifications. Appointments. Worries about family. Bills to pay. Decisions to make. Some distractions are small. Others carry enough weight to keep us awake at night. Before long, our minds become so crowded that we lose sight of what matters most.

I wonder if that is one of the greatest challenges of the Christian life—not that we stop believing in God, but that we slowly allow other things to occupy more of our attention than He does.

The older I get, the more I realize that faith is often less about learning something new and more about remembering what we already know. We know God is faithful. We know He has carried us through difficult seasons before. We know His grace has been enough. Yet it is surprisingly easy

to let the urgent crowd out the important.

That is why worship each week matters so much. It gives us the opportunity to pause. To breathe. To lay aside, for a little while, all the voices competing for our attention and intentionally turn our hearts toward the One who has never stopped paying attention to us.

Perhaps this week we all need to ask a simple question: What has been holding my attention lately? The answer may reveal more than we expect.

My prayer is that, as we gather this Sunday, God will gently help us clear away the clutter that fills our minds and remind us where our attention truly belongs.

I look forward to worshiping with you.

Top Ten Reasons Why YOU Should Become a Stephen Minister

#1 Stephen Ministers are skilled care givers

Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training before they are commissioned and assigned to care receivers. They learn skills such as listening, expressing feelings, setting boundaries, and being assertive. They also learn about specific challenges such as hospitalization, divorce, grief, and depression. Stephen Ministers feel well prepared to walk along a person in crisis, whether it is with an assigned care receiver, or in their own relationships with family, friends and co-workers. The care of a dedicated, trained, Christ-centered Stephen Minister can help that person in crisis find equilibrium and wholeness.

We need to grow our Stephen Ministry team. We are planning to start a new training class in October. We would love to have some of our awesome women and men join us. This is an amazing ministry in which you learn how to help others. You will also obtain a new set of skills.

Call one of our Stephen Leaders.
