9-2-2026 FUMC Words for Wednesday

What God Is Doing Through Us

Sometimes you don’t notice how much happens around a church until you stop and pay attention.

We tend to think about church in terms of Sunday morning. We come through the doors, find our usual seat, worship together, visit with friends, and eventually head home.

But come by the church on another day and you may see something completely different.

Children are learning and being cared for at CEC. People are gathering through O.A.S.I.S. Music is being rehearsed. Groups from our community are using the facilities. People are coming and going, being welcomed and finding a place where they belong.

There is a lot happening here.

And maybe that’s worth noticing.

Over the next several weeks, as we prepare for our 2027 stewardship emphasis, I want us to do something before we ever start thinking about budgets or giving cards.

I want us to look around.

Where do you see God at work through First United Methodist Church?

Paul writes that God gives us an abundance “for every good deed.” I like that picture. God gives, and then God’s gifts continue moving through us into the lives of others.

That’s really what stewardship is about.

Every ministry we offer, every child we welcome, every song we sing, every person we serve, and every time our building becomes a place for the community to gather is part of something larger than ourselves.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to celebrate some of those things.

And as we do, perhaps we will begin to notice something.

God has been doing quite a bit through us.

And I believe God isn’t finished yet.

In Christ,

Top Ten Reasons Why YOU Should Become a Stephen Minister

#5. Stephen Ministers are caregivers, not curegivers

Stephen Ministers are not therapists or problem solvers; they are caregivers. Only God can bring about healing, forgiveness and hope. Stephen Ministers are trained to listen and pray, to be reliable and non-judgmental, and help care-receivers express their feelings. Focusing on caring and not curing means Stephen Ministers never pressure a care receiver to “get better”. Stephen Ministers are there for as long as the process takes, and trust that God works in His own time to provide wholeness.

We need to grow our Stephen Ministry team. We are planning to start a new training class in October. We would love to have some of our awesome men and women join us. This is an amazing ministry in which you learn how to help others. You will also obtain a new set of skills.
