9-9-2026 FUMC Words for Wednesday

Because Someone Gave

Most of us can probably remember a church that helped shape our lives.

Maybe it was this church. Maybe it was somewhere else.

There was a Sunday School teacher who remembered our name. A choir that sang a hymn we still can’t hear without remembering someone we love. A youth counselor who put up with us when we were teenagers—which may qualify as an extraordinary act of Christian service.

Someone unlocked the doors.

Someone turned on the lights.

Someone taught the class.

Someone practiced the music.

And somewhere along the way, someone gave.

We probably didn’t think much about that part.

As children, we certainly didn’t wonder who paid the electric bill or bought the Sunday School material. We simply knew there was a church waiting for us.

That’s one of the beautiful things about generosity. We rarely know how far it will travel.

The people who gave to the churches of our childhood could not have known exactly what their gifts would accomplish. They simply believed the ministry was worth supporting.

We are the beneficiaries of their faithfulness.

And now it is our turn.

There are people being touched by the ministries of First United Methodist Church today because people in this congregation decided to give.

There are also children, teenagers, families and neighbors we haven’t met yet.

That’s something worth thinking about as we consider our giving for 2027.

Someone made ministry possible for us.

Whose life might God touch because we make it possible for someone else?

In Christ,

Top Ten Reasons Why YOU Should Become a Stephen Minister

#6. Stephen Ministers feel needed (because they are)

Stephen Ministry was created by a minister named Kenneth Haugk who realized that there are not enough pastors available to provide patient, long-term care to people in crisis. By training lay ministers in his congregation, he was able to ensure that the newly widowed, those going through divorce, people with chronic or terminal illness and many, many others were able to meet regularly with a compassionate listener. Stephen Ministry benefits our pasters, our congregation and our community.

We need to grow our Stephen Ministry team. We are planning to start a new training class in October. We would love to have some of our awesome men and women join us. This is an amazing ministry in which you learn how to help others. You will also obtain a new set of skills. We are behind in our recruiting efforts. Please give this further consideration and pray for others to step forward.

Thanks so much.

WE NEED YOUR CANS!

Please bring your bagged aluminum cans to the yellow can collection shed across from the Annex. The proceeds from the sale of these cans go toward the purchase of fuel and supplies for our mowers. This relieves some of the burden on our overall church budget as well.
Come join us at Face to Face encounter #23 which will be held at Emerson Church located at 11 Franklin Loop, Catersville, GA.

This four-day event will be held Tuesdays and Wednesdays October 20, 21, 27 and 28 from 9am to 3:30pm. The cost is $55. Lunch will be provided.

Healthy Aging Strategies

In Your 50’S & 60’S: Building The Foundation

 Build bone and muscle reserve: Muscle loss accelerates after 50! Prioritize resistance training twice a week and consume adequate protein to preserve lean muscle mass.

 Optimize cardiovascular tracking: This is the critical window to aggressively manage blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels to prevent long-term arterial damage.

 Keep up with cancer screenings: Stay on schedule for routine screenings, including colonoscopies, mammograms and prostate checks.

In Your 70’s and 80’s: Maintaining Independence

 Train for balance and mobility: Prevent dangerous falls by incorporating balance exercises tai Chi or heel-to-toe walking alongside your daily aerobic activity

 Protect cognitive reserve: Keep your brain sharp by learning entirely new complex skills – like an instrument or language – and maintaining robust daily social connections.

 Review medications regularly: Work with your doctor to audit your prescriptions annually to avoid polypharmacy and reduce adverse drug interactions.

 Prioritize sensory care: Address hearing and vision changes immediately; treating hearing loss early is directly linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline.
