Tickle – February 5, 2019

I truly want to thank all of you who have given financial support for and sweat equity for our second annual “A Night to Shine” event for those with special needs. We have our last night of training tonight at 6:30 pm. Because of all you have done, we are ready and I am very thankful. Well done church!

Thank you for all the cans during last Sunday’s Youth Soup or Bowl can drive - you have just got to see what you did “together” - come Sunday, we will share.

The Burgess family has been down for the count since Sunday afternoon. We are on the mend now but we have had to unplug and crawl under the covers. I am going to delay starting my next session of UM101 on Wednesday nights to Wednesday, February 13 at 6 pm. Please put that date on your calendar if you are interested in a 3-4 week course on where Methodists come from, what drives our theology, our understanding of baptism and Holy Communion, and how we are structured both locally and globally to do mission and ministry. I love telling our story - we have a good story to tell.

I invited the entire church this last Sunday to join with me in an intentional month of prayer as General Conference approaches Feb 23-26. The conference is focused on trying to discern a “way forward” for the global United Methodist Denomination on the human sexuality question. We had a great turnout last fall (roughly 120 people) on a Wednesday night presentation when I did my best to bring everyone up to speed with this conversation. Nothing has been decided - nor will be decided - until the conference happens. I ask (regardless of your perspective on this topic) that you join with me (and each other) praying for God’s will to rise up in this conversation when the roughly 860 delegates from around the world meet in St Louis the last week of February. There is more information below on how to stay informed as the conference unfolds below in this tickle if you seek it.

And lastly, since I missed the Superbowl, I sure do hope the Rams won by at least 30 points! I have it recorded - I may (or may not) watch it later…depending on how many people snicker at me today…
God’s Joy,
mark

Special Session of General Conference: February 23-26 in St. Louis
Thank you for joining in a season of prayer as we approach the Special Session of General Conference this month. As districts and churches have held conversations , some have asked for resources to share accurate information with your congregation about this event. The North Georgia Conference has adapted a resource “Your 2019 Special Session of the General Conference Communications Tool Kit” for your use. (Find it at www.ngumc.org/gc2019communicationtoolkit.)
The conference has also created a special email address specifically for your questions about the session. While we may not have answers to all of them, Bishop Sue will address questions by video. To ask a question, email WayForwardquestions@ngumc.org.
Once General Conference begins, there are a host of tools to stay current.
The event will be streamed by United Methodist Communications in its entirety — beginning with the Day of Prayer on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 9 a.m. and adjourning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
North Georgia Conference will send a Daily e-Newsletter during General Conference. Be sure to subscribe.
The North Georgia Conference will continually update the webpage www.ngumc.org/GC2019.

Easy links to official United Methodist Church Denominational (Global) news comes from a publication from the United Methodist Communications office that you can subscribe to at the following website umcom.org

On that web page, click the large “Subscribe box.” In the window that comes up, select Weekly Digest under United Methodist News. You then get a summary email from the United Methodist Church sent to you each week regarding the major developments in core stories around the globe. Among many other things, updates on the upcoming Special Session of General Conference in February will be found there. The North Georgia Conference Web site is a good source of continuous information as well - ngumc.org

After General Conference, clergy and laity are invited to District Gatherings.
The Atlanta-Emory, Atlanta-Roswell, and Gainesville Districts meeting will be March 24 , 4 to 6 pm at Buford First UMC.

Tickle – January 29, 2019

What a good turnout we had for yesterday’s services. Woo hoo!

Yes, the TICKLE is early. 🙂 We’re working fast and furious in the office today due to the harsh weather expected the rest of the week. Union County schools have already closed for tomorrow and, following our winter weather policy, we have done the same. The MAC and offices will remain closed until the Union County schools re-open. In addition, we have already cancelled Wednesday night supper and programming.

We pray everyone stays safe and warm during this extreme cold.

Take care, Evelyn

Wednesday Night Nurture:

Wow! What a day we had on Sunday! A family of two at 8:30, a family of four at 9:45, and another family of two at 11 united with what Christ is doing through this part of the body at FUMC of Union County! It is a Holy moment to see two adults experience their one baptism. And then the announcement of complete joy from our Finance Chair (details below in the “A Note from Finance” section.) It may have been cold outside, but it sure was warm inside!
God’s Peace,

Over this last year, Bob & Carol Head went on to glory in heaven. FUMC was blessed for many years by their ministry, their faith and their gifts. Even after they’re gone, their legacy continues to live on at FUMC, as they left in their estate a gift to the church of stocks currently valued at approximately $500,000. The Finance Team will be recommending to Church Council that this gift be used to pay down the MAC loan. It is critical that we not be deterred from our planned giving in 2019. Praise God for Bob & Carol Head, and for all of you in our church family!

Tickle – January 15, 2019

If you were in worship Sunday, you know our Honduras Mission team has safely returned and we are thankful. Now that our routine ministries have started back up for the Spring cycle, we are trying to focus the entire church on our 2nd annual Tim Tebow Foundation “A Night to Shine” event February 8. Once again, please go through to our web site to register as a volunteer - we can find a place for everyone to serve in preparations for that night, serving our guests on that night, and in clean up after the night. If you are going to be involved, you need to come to one of two training events (even if you did the training last year) - details are below - but one training event is THIS WED Night in the sanctuary at 6 pm and the other is next Sunday in the Sanctuary at 4 pm. Pastor mark, Joe and Kim Tatman will be here to facilitate. Our second mile giving emphasis for the entire month of January is this event. We have partnered with several businesses but we would also like to partner with you. Simply place “A Night to Shine” in the memo section of any second mile giving for this event. THANK YOU CHURCH! Lastly, the weather has been marginal and it just seems to be that way in January. But you really don’t want to miss this Sunday (Christians and water just go together!) Come worship. Come serve. Come watch God move. This is going to be a Sunday to remember…God’s Peace, pastor mark

A Night to Shine Volunteer Training:Because of the criteria between Tim Tebow Foundation and our FUMC Safe Sanctuary Policy, if you plan on registering as a volunteer for the February 8th “A Night to Shine” Event, you MUST attend one of our two 45 minute training sessions - even if you did this last year - you MUST do it again. Your background check is good for 4 years - but you still need to come to one of these training events. They are Wednesday Night, January 16 at 6 pm in the FUMC Sanctuary and Sunday afternoon, January 20 at 4 pm in the FUMC Sanctuary. Please go to our web site to register as a volunteer:firstmethodistblairsville.com There truly are places of service for everyone. We have over 170 people registered as volunteers already - but we know we will need more. Guest registration has already exceeded last years numbers. Help!

Hope House is having a fundraiser at Chick-fil-a this Thursday night beginning at 5:00 pm. Can’t get much easier to raise funds for this worthwhile benevolence center then to be told to go eat! 🙂
United Methodist Men Email Distribution:We have recently had a significant number of smaller projects on our Church Campus (like put up and take down the manger, remove trees, etc…) and in our Blairsville Community (like add a special access ramp) that are one day or half day kinds of projects. The way we have been sending out the call for those projects is via our UMM group email distribution. If you are not on that distribution but would like to be added, please respond to this tickle and we will add you. Most of these projects require 5-7 people for a half day. Not everyone comes, you come if it fits your schedule or if you are interested in the project. Usually someone steps forward as the coordinator and we just pass the list of people interested onto them to coordinate through. It seems to be working well. It’s a good way to get to know some other people in the life of the church. Some activities are weekday driven, some are weekend driven. We have a couple of light building projects coming up in the months to come - one on campus and one out in the community. Don’t miss out..
ATTENTION All Youth will attend Night to Shine Training with Ragan and Jennifer this Wednesday from 6-7 pm in the sanctuary. This will be the only youth programming for the evening.
