The Girl Scouts have their Ice Cream Recruitment Social in the Fundamentals room tonight for all girls from Kindergarten thru High School at 4 pm.

Wednesday night begins our Wednesday Night Nurture. Come check out dinner at 5 pm (technically, the meal is free but we put out a basket for donations to help us cover the cost of these meals.) I will kick off another iteration of United Methodist 101 classes (a 4-6 week study) with a very special conversation on United Methodist Polity - and how that polity is being used to navigate the human sexuality question our denomination is currently considering. If you are interested in how this conversation is unfolding, come be with me in the Sanctuary at 6 pm for 45 minutes. Nursery is provided during Wednesday night nurture after dinner. Children’s ministry (toddlers through 5th graders) will begin. Also, Jennifer de la Montagne and Ragan Cook (our new YHC Youth Intern) will meet with all our youth (6th graders through seniors) at THE GATHERING in the lower level of the MAC at 6 pm.

The Disciple 1 study informational meeting will be Sunday, August 19 at 2 pm in the lower level of the MAC. Come check it out - Shannon and and I will both be present to answer your questions about the study. This is the 34 week Bible Study facilitated by us. If you have never taken a study, take this one! It is a GREAT START!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pastor mark

Tickle – August 8, 2018

Wednesday Night Nurture begins next week - August 15. Pastor Mark will begin teaching a 4-6 week United Methodist 101 course that will begin with a conversation on our polity (how we make denominational decisions) and how our polity is moving us through the human sexuality topic. I discussed this in detail in last months newsletter - this is just a reminder. I am inviting everyone to come be informed on how our denomination is engaged in this conversation. We will meet in the Sanctuary at 6 pm August 15. The topic is polity (how our denomination makes decisions) but I clearly recognize the bigger issue in the room that night. I have heard a lot of misinformation and that will probably grow as we approach the called Special Session of General Conference in February to address this issue for our global denomination. My goal is that everyone be informed and aware as this conversation unfolds and what shape it has taken in recent months.

Shannon and Pastor Mark will offer once again our 34 week Bible Study called Disiciple 1. We teach this DVD driven study intentionally for people of all ages who may not have ever had time to take a Bible study. This is the class for you. This is a perfect “first step” into studying the Bible in a small group setting. Come check it out at our informational meeting on Sunday August 19 at 2 pm in the lower level of the MAC. Shannon and I will be there to walk you through the details so you can decide if you wish to do this. Disciple I was my first formal adult Bible study many years ago - it changed my life. Don’t worry about any barriers you may have that “seem: to get in the way of this - we will work with you to navigate them. Come walk with us through the Bible. Let’s discover God together. What this takes is a willing spirit, open heart, and commitment - everything else will appear.

On Saturday, August 11, volunteers from FUMC are hosting an appreciation dinner event for the Firefighter families of Union County.

Come to worship this Sunday and meet our new YHC Youth intern. Jennifer will be introducing her at all three services this Sunday!

The Connectional Group comprised of the 8 United Methodist Churches of Union County and Town’s County is doing it’s annual GREAT Night of Music at Hiawassee UMC on Sunday August 12 at 6:30 pm. The churches bring musical groups and we just have a fun night of music. Billy Hendricks and Rose Oberlin will be representing FUMC. Come early - it’s usually a full house.

Girl Scouts is having an Ice Cream Social and Recruitment event on August 14 in the Fundamentals Room for girls of all ages - up to and including highschoolers.

Due to illness,Chuck Morgan delayed starting the men’s weekly Bible study to next Tuesday, August 14 at 10 am in the MAC upstairs.

Details are below for the women’s weekly study on Wednesday’s August 22 at 10 am. If you are looking for a diverse group of women of all ages to fellowship and Book studies - come check this group out. They have a lot of fun together studying various Christian authors.

Have you been touched by the shared music ministry of Jeff Bauman and Keith DeFoor? Well then come be with us on August 26. We have many special things planned that day as our way of appreciating them and celebrating the 20th anniversary of their ministry at FUMC. Don’t miss this day!

Our CEC Preschool had parent orientation night last night. Our preschool year begins next week. We have a large enrollment this year. Please drive accordingly - there will be lots of 2,3,and 4 yr olds on campus!

A very special word of THANK YOU to our Trustees and church campus volunteers for the coordination work prepping us for the fall cycle. Come to church and see all the new rooms, lights, and carpeting. We are ready for all who come to God’s House!

Look at all that is happening! Come get involved. We have a place for you to make a difference! This is Christ’s “place of grace.” A community Church who’s core value is still to “know Christ and make Christ known.”

HELP NEEDED
9:45 Worship Service sound board: Gary Groves will train you. We need two new people to keep this a team of four so that everyone does one week out of four. We had no one in the sound booth this last Sunday. That required all of us who are leading worship to mute and un-mute our mics from the stage. It’s distracting and cumbersome. Gary is the sound Engineer - you don’t need to be - what we need is people willing to do the simple tasks in the sound booth during worship as coached by Gary. Help us worship with excellence!

9:45 Worship Service light board: Stacy Clements will train you. We need two more people to keep this a team of four so that everyone does one week out of four. This is not a complicated role - but it is vital to enhance our Praise Worship experience in a reduced light setting. Help us worship with excellence!

Fenced in Playground of the Hill: We need a handful of people who will oversee this vital area of our church. Our Preschoolers and our Children’s ministry use this area. Unattended, the weeds and poison Ivy take over quickly. Pastor mark took care of it last year. He cannot do it again this year. Basically, we need someone to spray and oversee this area to make certain there is nothing unsafe up there for any of our children.

Memorial Garden Area (Adjacent to the Sanctuary): We have a handful of people who doing the extra special care of this manicured sacred space on our campus. If you like caring for a very special small space that includes, push mower, weed eating, and blowing, join this group. This small area requires an extra amount of TLC. We will work out a schedule.

9:45 Service MAC Stage Design: We are looking for folks who are willing to occasionally get up on a ladder. The stage is a very large space. The sky is limitless in the possibilities. We need people willing to jump into preparing the stage for each season in the life of the church (not every Sunday.) Help us worship with excellence.

Summer is in full swing and looking glorious!

And while the song goes, “those lazy, hazy days of summer” you can bet that there’s no laziness going on here.Things are rolling right along as we’re getting in shape for our “fall” (hard to call it that when we still have weather in the 90’s) season. The Trustees have been hard at work in several areas on campus including laying new carpet in the downstair children’s side and installing new lights in the sanctuary. The youth are continuing their fundraising workdays on Saturdays. The directory is being printed and will be available for pick up this Sunday.( Look for a copy in your Sunday School room. Extras will be out on the narthex desk. If you miss one this week, there will be more next week. ) The preschool is expanding and adding a new 2 year old classroom. And our grass cutting crew is diligently grooming our lawn every week. Thank you to all the many hard working hands, backs and feet around here!

Have a wonderful week. Share a smile with someone you don’t know!
Evelyn
